Item Overview

Description:

“Freedom and bread will be brought only by Adolf Hitler… only Adolf Hitler can save the Reich…” – an official Nazi Party election leaflet issued ahead of the 1932 elections in Germany

An official election leaflet calling to vote for “Die Liste 2” – the Nazi Party list of Adolf Hitler at the ballot box ahead of the 1932 elections. “Freedom and bread will be brought only by Adolf Hitler... only Adolf Hitler can save the Reich and create jobs and bread... July 31 must bring victory to the German nation under the swastika! That is why the German people are voting for List 2 – the National Socialist German Workers' Party (Hitler’s movement).”

A Nazi propaganda leaflet from the Weimar Republic era, calling on voters to support the Nazi Party list at the ballot box. The leaflet opens with attacks against the SPD (Social Democratic Party), Zentrum (Catholic Centre Party), and the republican “system” parties, claiming that the democratic Weimar regime is a failing "system" in its death throes. “Lies have always been the SPD’s preferred method to cover up its crimes against the German people... Every time the SPD feared being held accountable for its actions, it saw lies as its lifeline, ” the leaflet asserts. It portrays the SPD as responsible for the economic crisis and the so-called national disaster, ” accusing it of implementing Notverordnungen (emergency decrees that led to economic collapse), slashing pensions, suppressing workers: “Six million hard-working people became unemployed”, blocking reforms, achieving nothing in foreign policy, and more. Throughout the text, a seemingly factual but one-sided narrative is presented, framing the SPD as the cause of the Reich’s collapse and the nation’s suffering — while positioning the NSDAP (Nazi Party) as the sole political salvation, calling for the complete replacement of all “system parties” with Hitler’s movement.

The leaflet describes a “mass exodus” from the SPD, claiming that the social base of the Social Democratic Party is collapsing and that the “workers” (Arbeiter) have already turned in large numbers to support the Nazis. This messaging is aimed at creating the impression that a broad political shift is already underway, urging the voter to “seize the moment.” In addition, the leaflet launches a fierce attack on the “Marxists” in a strongly anti-Communist tone, expressing hostility toward state officials, and includes at the bottom of its pages a propagandistic list of the “crimes” committed by the establishment parties: such as tax doubling, suppression of industry, harm to workers and pension cuts, and the “starvation” of the people. All democratic institutions are portrayed as interdependent and as serving the same elite interests. From this, the concluding message on the final page is drawn,   presenting Adolf Hitler as the national savior, the only one capable of bringing the people freedom, work, and bread.

This is a rare artifact from the July 1932 election campaign – one of the most pivotal electoral battles in the rise of the Nazi Party. In this election, the NSDAP became the largest party in Germany, though still without a majority, marking the final political crisis of the Weimar Republic. The messaging and print format of this leaflet are integral components of the propaganda that was widely distributed in the streets of cities like Stuttgart, Munich, and Berlin, just months before the Nazis seized power in January 1933 and abolished multiparty democracy and free elections.

In the early 1930s, the Nazi Party developed an unprecedented model of political campaigning, distinct from the traditional Weimar parties. It combined advanced marketing techniques for the time with a revolutionary ethos and rhetoric directly addressing the deep social distress of the Great Depression. Nazi propaganda utilized orchestrated mass rallies, torchlit marches, bold posters, mobile loudspeakers, and party-run newspapers to craft an image of Hitler as a charismatic leader and national savior, while simultaneously portraying parliamentary democracy as a failed and impotent system. Mass unemployment, fear of social decline, and growing anger toward establishment elites provided fertile ground for these messages. On the German street, their impact was tangible: working-class neighborhoods, industrial cities, and rural towns saw a sharp rise in Nazi visibility, with the eagle and swastika becoming part of the electoral landscape. The propaganda did not necessarily generate full ideological alignment with the Nazi platform, but it created a powerful sense of momentum, public legitimacy, and what many perceived as the only political solution in a time of crisis. Within a few short months, the Nazi Party became the most dominant mass force in the political system. The propaganda success of the NSDAP in the 1932 election rounds positioned it as the largest party in the Reichstag, making it a necessary player in any government formation. The combination of mass popular support, parliamentary deadlock, and pressure from conservative elites on President Hindenburg led, in January 1933, to Hitler’s appointment as Chancellor — a move that granted the movement a legal governing framework which, through orchestrated crises and authoritarian laws, was transformed within months into a total grip on power.
