Item Overview

Description:

Rare passport photos of Anne Frank and items from an exhibition held in Montevideo in her memory

Rare items exhibited at the exhibition “The World of Anne Frank: 1929 - 1945” in a town in Montevideo, Uruguay, during the 1980s. Passport photos of Anne Frank and more. From the newspaper archive of Ultimas Noticias, Uruguay.

  • Two early passport photos of Anne Frank (from the famous photo set of Anne Frank taken in a studio in Amsterdam), taken from folder Photo 1/1, page 55, were exhibited at the exhibition. They are affixed to a page with Spanish instructions regarding their display: "Preserve this photo, it must be presented in the best possible condition."
  • A black-and-white photograph of a detailed miniature model of the Frank family’s hiding place in Amsterdam, described on the reverse side on a piece of paper: "37.228 – The apartment layout in which Anne Frank lived while in hiding with her family, between the years 1942 and 1944."
  • A press photo described in Spanish: “November 3, 1989 – Miep Gies (right), aged 80, who helped Anne Frank hide from the Nazis in Amsterdam during World War II, together with the West German Ambassador Otto Graf von der Groeben (left), his wife Christa, and Miep’s husband Jan, on November 3, shortly before she received the 'Order of Merit, First Class' from Ambassador von der Groeben. Gies risked her life during the war by hiding the Frank family.” This is an official photograph from a recognition event held in The Hague in honor of Miep Gies, who was awarded the German Order of Merit in tribute to her courage and assistance to the Frank family.
  • Two photographs of attendees at a special event held in memory of Anne Frank as part of the exhibition.

Almost every year, the Frank family would have a set of 48 small passport-style portrait photos taken at a photography studio in Amsterdam. The two photographs before us are part of the series taken in May 1939. The Anne Frank House Museum notes that Anne’s famous passport photos were taken at Polyfoto in central Amsterdam. As is known, Anne herself cut out some of the photos and pasted them into her diary, sometimes adding notes. The last known photo of Anne was taken in May 1942. The photo sheets (each with 48 portraits) of all family members survived and were preserved by Anne’s father, Otto Frank. It is not known to us how these two passport photos ended up in the press archive from which they were exhibited in Uruguay, but it is known that in addition to the photos deposited by Otto Frank at the Anne Frank House, there are also portrait photographs of Anne in archives in Switzerland, and Getty Images holds photos of Anne as well as of her mother Margot.
