Item Overview

Description:

“The Jews Are Collaborating with Our Enemies” – An Antisemitic Publication Issued by the Puppet Government of Nazi Germany in Vichy France [1941]

A-Bé-Cé-Daire à l'usage des petits enfants – "For the Use of Small Children Learning to Read, and Adults Who Still Don’t Understand French..." – An antisemitic publication issued by the Vichy government in France, structured as a set of “basic” antisemitic definitions following the letters of the alphabet, accompanied by antisemitic illustrations by Mars-Strick. Published by G. Mazeyrie, Paris, [1941].

Each page of the booklet features antisemitic caricatures portraying Jews with stereotypical features, accompanied by antisemitic sentences beginning with one of the letters of the alphabet, in sequential order. These entries present so-called “basic concepts, ” depicting Jews as collaborators with the Americans and British against French interests, while also mocking Britain’s defeats on various fronts. For example, under the letter Y, titled “The Last Defenders of the Golden Calf, ” two Jews with stereotypical faces are shown gazing at the ship Normandie (a symbolic reference to territory soon to be conquered), with the Statue of Liberty in the background holding a Jewish seven-branched menorah. Under the letter O, an illustration shows a Nazi salute accompanied by a call for collaboration with Hitler: “But let us follow our Marshal.

Offer our loyal support. At his call, without hesitation,  We answer: Yes! It is for France!” Under the letter V, referring to Victory, the booklet mocks Winston Churchill: “Churchill promised it so many times… Gone with the wind.” Under the letter Z, the text reads: “To finish off this alphabetical list, let’s dedicate a number to Z — it’s England’s rating… after all its ‘successes’… zero.” Similar rhetoric and illustrations appear throughout the remaining pages, making this publication a propagandistic tool of the Vichy regime filled with antisemitic indoctrination and pro-Nazi messaging, aimed at both children and adults.
