Naukeurige Beschryving van Gantsch Syrie, en Palestyn of Heilige Lant, by Olfert Dapper. Amsterdam: Jacob Van Meurs, 1677. Dutch. Two parts in one volume.  A monomalic book about the Land of Israel and Syria, by Olfert Dapper (1636-1689) - Dutch writer, historian and geographer. 


Includes an engraved frontispiece, 39 engraved plates (most double-spread or folded) and engravings incorporated in the text. These include maps of Palestine, showing the territories of the 12 Tribes of Israel; maps and illustrations of Jerusalem, holy temple,The Tabernacle, the Mount of Olives and Bethlehem; Jaffa viewed from the sea, maps and engravings that depict Syria, Damascus and Tripoli, Characters typical of the East; and more.

Olfert Dapper (1636-1689) one of the most important Dutch historians and geographers who dealt with his research in African countries (his book on Africa is considered to be one of the authoritative sources for the description of the continent) and the Near and Far East. His books, which excelled in great detail, gained world renown in his lifetime. In Amsterdam, a street called Dapperstraat was named after him, and in Paris a museum was opened, named after him in 1986.
