"I Was Hitler's Maid" – A Book Written by British Secret Service Officer John Bieber Aimed at Undermining Hitler's Image as the "Supreme Leader" in the Eyes of the Germans. London, 1940 – First Edition.
I WAS HITLER'S MAID The sensational & astounding story of the girl who saw HITLER in his own home. What he eats, drinks, wears. His habits, his vices-and his amazing love affairs, by Pauline Kohler. Published by John Long Limited, London, 1940 – First Edition. Original dust jacket.
An Anti-Nazi Propaganda Book Written by British Secret Service Officer John Beevor Under the Guise of a Woman Named Pauline Kohler, Who Was Allegedly a Maid at Hitler’s Holiday Villa in Berchtesgaden. The descriptions and stories presented in Kohler's voice were based on highly detailed, verified intelligence – such as the story of the Jewish woman Bertha Binyar, who was tortured to death by the Nazi SS, the debauched parties of the Nazi elite, the hatred of Jews, and detailed descriptions of Hitler’s estate, his daily schedule, associates, and hobbies, all according to confirmed intelligence available to the British. However, historians argue that although Beevor strove to accurately depict the sadistic behavior and cruelty of the Nazis in general, and Hitler in particular, based on solid intelligence gathered by the British Secret Service, the reality was far worse than what is described in the book.
To create an atmosphere of credibility, at the opening of the book, "Kohler" writes:
"This is a book of facts about Hitler, facts that were until now unknown to the world. I was a servant in Berchtesgaden. I had a unique opportunity to see the real Hitler... I escaped from Germany. As I write these words in the free sunshine of France, I know that in a few days, I will sail to Brazil to build a new life there. But I want the world to know the real Hitler, to know the truth about his private life, his friendships, the people around him, the secrets of the mysterious mountain cabin of Berchtesgaden. Everything I reveal, I have seen myself or learned from irrefutable sources. I have tried to present an objective and truthful picture. In part, the picture is unpleasant. But the truth about a man like Hitler must always have an unpleasant side. And if this book helps those fighting against Hitlerism to understand something about the greatest enemy of civilization, I will feel that the years of terror I spent in Berchtesgaden were not entirely in vain…”
The book includes an alleged photograph of the German maid to enhance the story’s credibility (the photograph was created using photomontage techniques).
Pauline Kohler “tells” how she worked for Hitler, revealing his private life, personal habits, strange mannerisms, and unstable character. The book portrays Hitler as a pathetic, paranoid figure with many human weaknesses, aiming to undermine his image as the “Supreme Leader” in the eyes of German and international readers. It focuses on exposing the dark and ridiculous aspects of the Nazi regime and Hitler’s personality, while emphasizing the immorality of the Nazi leadership.
