Issue of the French newspaper "Le Grelot" - antisemitic cartoon on the title page
Issue of the French newspaper LE GRELOT - February 6, 1876 - large antisemitic caricature on the title page depicting a wealthy Jewish couple with long noses (one nose resembling an elephant trunk) disguised as day laborers.
Le Grelot was a French satirical newspaper, originally Republican and anti-clerical. It was written by Arnold Mortier and published from 1871 to 1903. Each issue contained four pages and featured a large colorful caricature on the title page. It was a Republican and anti-communalist newspaper that was subject to many lawsuits by the censorship. The main designers were: Bertal, Henri Demaré, Alfred Le Petit, Hector Moloch and Pepin. The newspaper took its clear Republican positions, and then it became more clearly reactionary, antisemitic, anti-Freemasons and anti-clergy. Since its founding in 1871, Le Grelot published around 2,000 issues.
