Jewish Emigration - a rare booklet aimed at increasing Jewish emigration from Germany during the rise of anti-Semitism. Berlin, 1936

"Jüdische Auswanderung - Reichsvereinigung der Juden in Deutschland" - "Jewish Emigration - Reich Association of Jews in Germany" was edited by the Central Office for Jewish Emigration of the Union of Jewish Aid in Germany. Editors: Mark Wischnitzer; Arthur Goldschmidt; Arthur Prinz; Alexander Israel Guttfeld. Published by SCHMOLLER & GORDON, Berlin, September 1936. This rare booklet was published by the "Hilfsverein der deutschen Juden" - Aid Society for Jews in Germany in order to assist Jews in emigrating to South America following the rise of anti-Semitism in Germany - three years before the outbreak of World War II and with the Iron Curtain descending upon European Jews and the strengthening of Nazi rule. Only 10,000 copies were printed. German.

The introduction written by the editors stresses the importance of leaving Germany at that time: "The Jew who escapes today from Germany in order to seek a new home abroad, leaves the land in which his ancestors lived not once for many generations... usually not by choice... Among the Jewish organizations responsible for overseeing Jewish emigration within the Reich, the Aid Society for Jews in Germany is in first place... Tens of thousands, perhaps 150,000 Jews have received advice from the Aid Society since 1933...".

The booklet, which was intended to convey important information to Jews in Germany about the emigration options available to them, extensively discusses the various economic conditions for Jewish emigrants in European countries, particularly in South America, which were considered the safest for Jews, and encourages Jews to leave Germany despite the difficulties involved, making exceptional efforts to facilitate the process, before it is too late. Detailed explanations are given regarding the living conditions for Jews in South American countries, crucial information about the voyage by sea, language learning, climate changes, local currency, and many details about appropriate behavior in a foreign country, including recommendations about what clothing and furniture to take on the journey.

The booklet further details the living conditions in Argentina and South America in general and recommends it as the most comfortable country for Jews to immigrate to, due to its good living conditions, important information about customs and taxes, economic resources of the country, job opportunities, the attitude towards immigrants, women's professions, the stock market, schools and educational institutions, the quality of Brazilian products, railways and transportation, and even the places that are recommended to visit.

In the second part of the booklet, in an exceptional effort to convince Jews to leave Germany, letters from Jews who emigrated to South America are presented, in which they describe how satisfied they are with the new country they arrived in, and how good their living conditions are.

Accompanying the booklet are advertisements for Jewish businesses in Germany, Eretz Israel, and the United States. On the back cover is an illustration of the Earth and the exit points from Germany through "Atlantic Express" to safe areas: Palestine, South America, North America, and South Africa.

Extremely rare! The booklet appears in the permanent exhibition of the Yad Vashem Museum. Only one copy is listed in the world library catalog, WorldCat.
