Ion Pribeagu - [1887-1971] - The Jewish prisoner and the Kapo

Ion Pribeagu [In his Hebrew name: Yitzchak Lazarovitch 1887-1971] - The Jewish forced laborer carries stones in a wheelbarrow and the Kapo punishing him. Ink on paper - signed.

Ion Pribeagu [1887-1971]; was the main pen name of the writer, the Romanian Jewish humorist poet Isac Lazarovici. One of the most influential Jewish artists in Romanian culture in general. Issac (Yitzchak) Lazarovic was born in Solica in Butusan County, Romania. Known for his rhyming satires, which were published in many magazines and under several pen names. In 1913 he edited the humorous magazine Caricatura, many of his topical works were presented in the National Theater of Bucharest and on many Romanian theater stages, and he was also active in the weekly Pardon (Forgiveness), and participated in many Romanian magazines. Pribiago was short and wore thick-rimmed glasses. He used to introduce himself as "Mic şi al dracului" (small but ointment demon). During the persecutions of the Antonescu regime, Pribiago was one of the Jewish hostages of the authorities. He wrote the humorous texts for Constantine Tanasa's shows in the years 1939 - 1944. Radio broadcasts, in which Pribiago read his satirical poems, gained great popularity. In November 1942 he was included in the list of Jewish writers banned from publication in Romania under the Antonescu regime. In 1962, at the age of 75, he immigrated to Israel, joining his son and three daughters. In Israel, he published his poems in the Romanian-language Israeli magazine Viaţa Noastră and wrote the texts for two shows in Romanian, which were staged in Israel by his son-in-law, the promoter Taufil Roller.

Pribiago's original works in general, and in particular on the subject of the Holocaust, are extremely rare.
