Four newspaper with harsh photographs from the death camps. May - October 1945
Four important newspaper issues that came out at the end of the war, and reported for the first time in detail the horrors of the Nazi death camps - harsh photographs from the camps on the day of their liberation - the murdered alongside the survivors in their dire situation. May - October 1945. Complete sheets.
- Issue of LE SOIR Illustre dated May 3, 1945. On the cover 'Historical meeting between the Russian and American armies'. In the middle pages of the newspaper are many photographs taken by Roger Crouquet, in which survivors of the Buchenwald camp are seen with a look of mixed joy and sorrow, next to the liberators from the Allies, as well as photographs of those who perished. And a harsh description of the photographer from the allied soldiers: "Here in front of us is the gallows... the ropes that tied thousands of necks still hang there... to the left of the gallows is a pile of bones...".
- The French issue of Lespoir, dated May 7, 1945. An extensive article about the liberation of the Buchenwald camp the day before, accompanied by a photo of resistance prisoner Henri Perrin, as well as a photograph of female prisoners in the Bergen-Belsen camp.
- NEUE Berliner Illustrierte from October 1, 1945 - special edition on Nazi crimes in the death camps - harsh photographs. The newspaper Berliner Illustrirte Zeitung ('Berlin newspaper in pictures') was distributed from 1892 to 1945. The newspaper that was published once a week on Thursdays was actually the most widely circulated in Europe with a record number of 2 million copies in the early 1930s.) In the middle pages there are photographs from the Buchenwald, Belsen, Majdanek and Theresienstadt camps showing the crematorium, thin prisoners, bodies, and the belongings of the dead. On the top left are the photos of two people who were known for their cruelty and even had friendships: the Nazi war criminal Irma Garza who served as a guard at the 'Auschwitz' camp and Josef Kramer who commanded the concentration camp in Bergen-Belsen. Kramer was directly responsible for the death of thousands of people. The two were convicted in the 'Blazen trial' about a month and a half after the publication before us on November 17, 1945 and were hanged in Hamlin prison together by Albert Pierpoint on December 13, 1945.
- The French issue of LA MARSELLAISE which came out at the end of the war (no date specified), and contains difficult photographs of those who perished in Auschwitz, Bergen-Belsen, Buchenwald, and others, and an extensive overview of the number of those who perished in each camp.
