Rare and early publication about Petliura riots in Ukraine

DOCUMENTS SUR LES POGROMES EN UKRAINE ET L'ASSASSINAT DE SIMON PETLURA A PARIS - Documents about the pogroms in Ukraine and about the assassination of Semyon Petliura in Paris. Early publication documenting the internal occurrences at the highest levels during the Petliura riots in Ukraine in 1917-1920 using over 100 internal documents of the Ukrainian Republic attempting to purge it of the murder of the Jewish masses. Published by LIBRAIRIE DU TRIDENT, Paris 1927.

In the years 1917-1920, large-scale pogroms against Jews took place in the territory of Ukraine under the auspices of the Russian Civil War. During 1919, more than 1,500 separate pogroms took place in 1,300 different settlements, in which at least 50,000 Jews were massacred (the maximum estimate is as high as 200,000 killed) and tens of thousands were injured, tortured and raped. The pogroms were perpetrated by regular and irregular military forces that belonged to all parties fighting in the conflict: the Army of the People's Republic of Ukraine, the White Army of Anton Danikin, the Soviet Red Army, the Polish Army and more. The events were identified most of all with the Ukrainian People's Republic, whose people were responsible for the largest number of pogroms and Murdered, and Hebrew nicknames derived from the name of its leader, Simon Petliura - Ukrainian statesman and last President of the Ukrainian People's Republic - The Ukrainian political entity established during the Russian Civil War and soon collapsed. Republican forces, mostly irregular, were among the perpetrators of the pogroms in Ukraine in which tens of thousands of Jews were killed, and Petliura was accused that although he issued condemnations and tried to stop the killings, in fact he closed his eyes and took no real steps in time. Against this background, Petliura was murdered by Shalom Schwarzbard - a Russian Jew - in 1926, while in exile in Paris.

The publication before us is intended to protect the Ukrainian Republic, and to claim through authentic documents that for its part it did not encourage anti-Semitism, nor the disturbances against the Jews, and that the Ukrainian government did everything in its power to prevent the disturbances against the Jews, and that Simon Petliura was murdered even though he was not to blame for what happened to the Jews
