On 3 and 4 April 1945, the Royal British Air Force landed a heavy bomb on Nordhausen. Large parts of the city were destroyed, and close to 9,000 people were killed, including about 1,500 inmates in the Balka camp. Work in the factories was stopped even earlier, on April 1, and the bombing was the catalyst for the complete evacuation of the camps. Following the bombings, most of the prisoners were sent on In cargo trains and on foot on death marches, to Bergen-Belsen, Sachsenhausen and Ravensbruck. Many prisoners died of exhaustion and appalling conditions during the evacuation, and many others were killed along the way. On April 13, SS men collected more than a thousand prisoners and put them in a place, which they later set on fire. Prisoners trying to escape were shot. SS men tried to destroy the evidence, but the rapidly advancing American forces discovered the atrocity the next day. On April 11, United States Army units took over the camp. After occupying the camp area, Allied forces recruited residents of the nearby town to bury the corpses that were scattered there.
