The Mauthausen concentration camp [Konzentrationslager Mauthausen] in Upper Austria was mainly used for forced labor. It was established in 1938 next to the city of Mauthausen, and was initially used for the incarceration of opponents of Nazism. Beginning in 1941, its purpose changed and the Nazis started to imprison many Jews there, mainly from communities in Czechoslovakia and Holland. 38,000 Jews were murdered in the camp, most died of forced labor. The camp was liberated in May of 1945 and was one of the last liberated by the US army.

Holocaust survivor and renowned researcher Dr. Isaiah Trunk [1905-1981]: Chief Archivist of the Jewish Scientific Institute YIVO (Jewish Scientific Institute, now the Institute for Jewish Research) in New York. Trunk, expert on Jewish history during the Nazi occupation of Poland. Born in Poland, he won the National Prize for Jewish Books in 1975, for his monograph entitled The Judenrat: "The Jewish Councils in Eastern Europe Under Nazi Occupation", published in New York by Macmillan Publishing in 1972.

He has authored numerous articles and studies on the Holocaust in English and Yiddish, including his groundbreaking research on the Judenrat in Eastern Europe, published in English in 1972 and in Hebrew in 1979.
