Madonna of Sorrows
Painting depicting the Sorrowful Madonna with a different iconography in the number of swords piercing the Virgin's heart and a very mournful expression. In this case, there is a single sword, and Mary's face shows a different pathos, almost an ecstasy in suffering, looking upward in search of explanations or perhaps a premonition of a future and ultimate sorrow, as prophesied by Simeon during the presentation of Jesus at the Temple, 'And a sword will pierce your own soul too.'
