Dream of St. Joseph first half of the 18th century
first half of the 18th century
Technique: oil painting on canvas in an ancient coeval frame
Dimensions: 72 x 96 cm

This evocative canvas of extraordinary pictorial quality is the work of one of the most original painters of the Italian settecento, the Genoese Alessandro Magnasco, called the Lissandrino. His peculiar rapid and flickering brush stroke preceded the pictorial experiments of the artists of the next century. According to sources, after an initial training in Milan, he quickly abandoned the genre of the portrait to devote himself to the landscape paintings with scenes animated by small figures of monks, gypsies, lumberjacks and acrobats inserted in large and gloomy backgrounds of stormy and dark landscapes.   For the realization of the landscapes with ruins and architecture he collaborated with other painters, specialized in the genre, such as Clemente Spera and Antonio Francesco Peruzzini whose traits could also be recognized in our canvas. This unpublished painting, pendant to another one in a private collection depicting the Rest during the escape to Egypt represents the biblical episode of the Dream of St. Joseph. The scene is set in a vast landscape with a verdant and stormy forest. The characters immersed in the bush are made with few touches and essential spots. On the bank of a small river, flanked by large leafy trees that open the foreshortening to an ashy blue sky, lies Saint Joseph in a deep sleep. The angel appears to him to announce that the son of Mary is the fruit of the Holy Spirit, as it is illustrated in the narrative group in the background on the right. The entire composition is characterized by a deep feeling of spirituality and religiosity: the stormy sense of the surrounding nature is placated by the miraculous dream revelation. The figures that at first seem to get lost in the greenery and in the shadow of the dense and vibrant vegetation, emerge from the bottom with skillful and rapid touches according to the rendering of light.
