Anglesey, Wales 1788 - a copper Penny token issued by the Parys Mine Company of Anglesey. Obverse: hooded Druid's head facing left within a wreath of oak leaves. Reverse: the entwined cypher of the company, surrounded by the legend WE PROMISE TO PAY THE BEARER ONE PENNY with the date 1788. Weight: 24.8 g. The Anglesey ”Druid's Head” tokens are among the earliest and best known of the British 18th-century trade tokens (Conder Tokens). They were issued against the acute shortage of small copper coin in Britain and were used to pay the workforce of what was then the largest copper mine in Europe; the company undertook to redeem them at face value.
