Lot of 5 brass tokens imitating the George III Spade Guinea of 1791, weight of each token approx. 3.94 g. Obverse: laureate bust of George III facing right, surrounded by GEORGIUS III DEI GRATIA. Reverse: crowned spade-shaped royal shield with the date 1791. Closer inspection shows that these are not gold coins but brass tokens, and that the legend around the shield is not that of a genuine spade guinea (M.B.F.ET.H.REX.F.D.B.ET.L.D.S.R.I.A.T.ET.E) but reads T.B.ET.T.A.REX.F.DB.AR.ST.D.S.T.M.S.ET.C - standing for Thos. Brookes & Thos. Adams, Barr Street, Die-sinkers, Tool makers, Stampers, etc., the name and address of the Birmingham die-sinking and stamping firm. The tokens served as advertising pieces for the firm and also as gaming counters. Since Brookes & Adams only moved to their Barr Street premises in 1865, the tokens must be dated to 1865 or later - by which time the guinea was long out of circulation, making the design safe to copy.
