Evgeny (Eugene) Zhilinsky art statement/CV

Evgeny (Eugene) Zhilinsky - architect, artist and art critic - was born in 1962 in Leningrad, USSR. He was a participant of the International Biennale of Architecture (Sofia 1989), the First Biennale of Contemporary Art (Leningrad 1990) and the Biennale of Travel Sketches (Clermont-Ferrand, France 2008). After graduating from the Faculty of Architecture at the Academy of Arts (I.E. Repin State Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture), he successfully combined his architectural career and active participation in the Leningrad’s artistic life for 4 years. And then in 1990 he repatriated to Israel, where he continued immediately to do the same. For 12 years, Eugene lived in Jerusalem and worked as the design architect for the Jerusalem Institute of Urbanism. An architect who masterfully mastered the technique of watercolor painting and an art critic, Eugene took the oil painting challenge when he stopped seeing an interest in the canonical deserted landscape and architectural fantasies in the spirit of Piranesi and Chirico. And then he moved to comics as “any other smart artist who sooner or later wants to revive his images” (Robert Longo). He is also the member of the art groups "The Battle Elephants" and "Leviathan", and the creator of the LP designs for the famous “Bravo" band (Moscow). He is always in a group, because "an existence is to be in interaction."
A tireless traveler, Eugene lived in Canada for 20 years, where he became seriously involved in the genre of urban sketching. His "travel sketches" are extremely diverse: these are both classical monumental forms, and creatively independent "transcripts", free from precise fixation of reality.
Currently, Eugene has returned to Israel, where he works as an architectural illustrator, and he draws stories and designs LP in his spare time.
