Silver Amulet Case – Italy, 19th Century Jewish silver amulet case, Italy, early 19th century. Hallmarked and decorated with repoussé floral and foliate motifs. Both sides feature a central circular cartouche enclosing the name ”Shaki”; the top of the case has an opening for inserting the amulet, covered by a removable lid. Cases of this type were used to hold amulets that were folded and stored within their interior. The amulets were sometimes inscribed for a specific individual or purpose and would be replaced when the case passed to another person; over time, the cases themselves came to serve as amulets.
