Decorated copper plate for Havdalah - Heinrich Schwed - Munich, 1924
A small copper plate for Havdalah, decorated with verses and stars of David, made by Heinrich Schwed. Munich, [ca. 1924].
A circular inscription is engraved on the edge of the center of the plate - "Mitzvot Ha-Ha-Bara Me'irat Einim" (Psalm 19:9), as well as a Star of David surrounded by Hebrew punctuation marks. In the middle are engraved the traditional wishes "Got Wach" [Good Week] and "Got Yaher" [Good Year]. The rim of the plate is decorated with stars of David. The plate is signed in the center "HSM" (Heinrich Schwed, Munich).
Heinrich Schwed (1880-1962), born in Reichmannsdorf, Germany. In 1924, he established a trading house in Munich for "handicrafts" and a workshop for the production of such objects. Schwed continued to create decorated plates, advertising signs, and other objects until 1937, when the business was confiscated by the Nazi authorities and he himself left Germany with his family and found refuge in Argentina.
