Leo Roth, Israeli painter, born in Poland, 1914-2002

Leo (later Lior) Roth was born in Galicia, Poland. In 1920, the family moved to Germany. In 1933, Roth immigrated to the Land of Israel. He worked as a shepherd and farmer at Kvutzat Kinneret and later joined Kibbutz Afikim. In 1940, he became a member of the Palestine Art Society. In 1951, the kibbutz sent him to study fresco and mural painting in Paris. When he returned to Israel, he was appointed director of the Art Academy of the Kibbutz Movement.

Cubism influenced Roth. His work has much in common with Israeli artist Naftali Bezem. His colorful canvases feature Biblical imagery and references to early pioneer culture.
