Reuven Rubin, Israeli, born in Romania (1893-1974)
Reuven Rubin was born in Galac, Romania, as Riven (Reuben) Zlikovic. His father served as a petty merchant and as a cantor in the synagogue. In 1908 the family moved to the town of Platychan. Around 1908, he left school to help support his family. At that time he was a member of the "Maccabi" sports association in Glatz. In 1912 he immigrated to Israel to study at Bezalel in Jerusalem. After about a year, he left school, which he saw as outdated, and returned to Romania. There, he served as an accountant and as a grain merchant. In 1913 he went to study art in Paris, France. With the outbreak of the First World War, he returned to Romania, where he lived until 1919. He was close to the group of Yiddish writers of the magazine "Licht" in the city of Iasi and to various Zionist circles. After the war, Reuven joined the circle of Jewish writers and artists in Chernivtsi. There, he met the painter Arthur Kolnik. In 1921 they both went to present an exhibition in New York, United States. Upon his return to Romania, Reuven lived in Bucharest. In 1923 he immigrated to the Land of Israel for the second time. At first, he moved to Jerusalem and was active in the "Hebrew Artists Association", but in 1924 he settled in Tel Aviv.
