Large Afro-Brazilian “Penca de Balangandan ” Amulet - Length: 30 × 35 cm. The item is made of a metal alloy with a dark patina and signs of natural corrosion. An exceptionally large Afro-Brazilian “Penca de Balangandan” amulet originating in the state of Bahia, Brazil. The item is designed in the style of the 19th century and was probably made in the first half of the 20th century. Its impressive dimensions indicate that it served as a principal protective amulet, hung in the home, on a wall or on the entrance door, to bring good luck and ward off negative energies. The upper section features the “Nave, ” the central metal hanger designed in the form of a stylized boat, recalling the slave ships that crossed the ocean. At the top of the hanger are two sculpted birds facing in opposite directions, a traditional motif representing the symbolic connection between Africa and the Americas. The lower section of the hanger has serrated teeth from which the amulets are suspended. The group of suspended amulets—the Balangandans —comprises a rich collection of three-dimensional elements traditionally handcrafted from hammered and soldered sheet metal. Among the charms are various fruits and vegetables with net-pattern decoration and detailed leaves, including pomegranates, pumpkins and an ear of corn, representing abundance, health and fertility.
