Kusama Affandi, 1907 to 1990, Indonesian, oil painting on canvas depicting an Expressionist portrait of an old man smoking a pipe, 1976. Signed and dated, lower right. Framed. Kusama Affandi is considered the father of Indonesian modern painting as he was the first Southeast Asian artist to gain worldwide recognition. From his sponsorship of organizations for young artists to the inspiration of his self-taught expressionism, he helped raise future generations of Indonesian artists. His unique method of painting was squeezing pigment directly from the tube to create bold lines of impasto, and spreading with his fingers and hands. He believed that in that way he imbued the canvas with his own human spirit and conveyed more depth of humanity.
