ANTIQUE 18TH C BIBLICAL ETCHING BY JOHANNES LUYKEN
An antique 18th century engraving Test of the locusts Made by Johannes or Luyken, Dutch, 1649-1712, after Covens-Mortier. On the outskirts of a city, people and animals flee or wrap around the grasshoppers that cover everything. The sky is filled with dark clouds of locusts. The print is an imagination of the eighth plague that God brought over Egypt. Note: Johannes or Jan Luyken was a Dutch poet, illustrator, and engraver. Luyken illustrated the 1685 edition of the Martyrs Mirror with 104 copper etchings. Thirty of these plates survive and were part of The Mirror of the Martyrs exhibit. He also published Het Menselyk Bedryf, The Book of Trades, in 1694, which contains numerous engravings of 17th-century trades by Luiken and his son Caspar. Pieter and David Mortier were booksellers in Paris and have published a wide range of geographical works. After Pieters death, his widow continued the business until their son Cornelius took over. Cornelius started a partnership with his brother-in-law Johannes Covens and established the famous publishing house Covens and Mortier in Amsterdam. Antique Engravings, Dutch Art, Prints And Multiples For Wall Decor.
