ETHIOPIAN PAGE FROM ILLUMINATED COPTIC MANUSCRIPT
An antique page from the full page illumination, one of twenty four from a manuscript of the Gospel that reflects Ethiopias longstanding Christian heritage. The full page paintings depict scenes from the life of Christ and four portraits of the evangelists introduce the respective Gospel texts. The illuminations depict scenes from the life of Christ and portraits of the Evangelists. The text and its pictorial format are based upon manuscripts produced by the Coptic Church. Here, however, these prototypes are transformed into local forms of expression. For example, the imagery is two dimensional and linear, which is characteristic of Ethiopian painting. Framed.
