WALTER E. LAUER
(1893 - 1966) U.S. Army officer who commanded the 99th Infantry Division in the Battle of the Bulge. The green troops of the 99th, with the 2nd Infantry Division, held a key sector with large repositories of ammunition, fuel, and supplies. Despite being outnumbered by German forces at least 5:1 during the Battle of Elsenborn Ridge they did not yield. It was the only American sector where the Germans failed to advance. A.L.S. 'W L', 1p. 8.5 x 5 in., [n.p., n.d.]. Although this letter was once attached to a now-absent photo, its content remains very good. In part: '...This photo was taken...just after the 99th stopped von Rundstedt & turned him south in December '44. I will never forget it. The 99th fought day and night for about 10 days in this fight which was the beginning of the Battle of the Bulge...I have always felt the 99th were the unsung heroes of that battle...' Very good.
